Almost, all of our effort either production or service are focused in satisfying current need. Despite, for now, our life seems to be improved; question of sustainability, and in long term, existence are upcoming. Scientist and expert working in this sector are working hard to bring out the reality and seems to be well convinced that human activities is cause to accelerated climate change. Many politician and leaders in various sector, around the world, are appealing for immediate actions toward climate change. However, large segment of population still doesn't either know are yet to be convinced for their prompt contribution to ward its mitigation/adaptation. Here, I will describe how our activities are responsible for accelerating the climate change and the changes in global system are coming out.
Majority of our activities, weather it be a production or services; are focus toward instant human welfare. Doing so, we are:
c) Generating massive solid waste like eg. plastic bag etc. and bottles in the sea
You might not believe and ask yourself "Are we doing so?"; This is dynamic maps by NASA, which shows how carbon dioxide emission is changing in recent past and could affect our life.
See: NASA Maps for detail
Action has reaction. Although, earth system have buffering capacity, but they have some limited to work for. As our action tends to cross the limits; the system start responding differently, for example; some of which can be summarized as below:
b) Melting ice
d) Change in precipitation pattern
These are some events and effects what we call as climate change.
Worried!! It is indeed obvious because we feel as if we are developing but in same time we are loosing liveable earth. We might have heard about these issues, but as climate change effects are slow onset and it takes years to come into effect. The documentary from National Geographic, describes how ice melting can change the area in earth.
From: National Geographic
After viewing this, you must be amazed, climate change is true and it has effected the whole global systems, which are basic life support system.
Continuing our business as usal (Carbon Intensive Development) not only mean climate change but also push humanity into crisis. Once irreversible change occurs and climate change impacts comes into surface, it will be too late to start mitigation.
Now you might be wondering about how we can act toward climate change. Yes, we have and we can. But; the first step is to make a choice. Yes a choice.., at this little delayed but good enough right time. A choice as mentioned by Mark Carney, BOE mentions as "change course or prepare for disaster". Our choice matter because what we do is what we get. Our environment friendly action will provide us liveable earth and action that accelerats environment degradation will worsen our life support system.
Great start here. I like that you are hyperlinking to lots of interesting, relevant sites. You should also link to peer-review studies as well though, just to keep a good academic balance.
ReplyDeleteThanks Anson ! Next post will have derivatives from peer-reviewed scientific work.

ReplyDeleteGreat thought.......Lets see what Paris will deliver...its amazing that scientific body needs to convinced politician instead of heading towards solutions. Lets connect climate change with political ecology, it may helps. Thank you for your initiation.
ReplyDeletethank you manju; paris will have milestone inception if we (commom people) start influncing policy community for immidiate action! let's keep eye open and start speaking !

ReplyDeleteGreat Bishal, keep adding more. Very informative too. I personally think that to overcome the problems of climate change, change has to take place at very small economic unit like household but for their behaviour to change, support in form of concrete policy is necessary. Importantly, we must remember that this kind of policy will affect the livelihoods of many poors, so my point is that the balanced or middle approach towards this global problem is the challenge ahead of COP 2015 in France must table and we academicians must support this through some scientific findings like some of the recent studies done in your country. Let us keep thinking about this issue and safe this planet for the future generations. Let us all be responsible global citizen.
